The Structured Family Intervention

The structured Intervention is not a new idea; Introduced by Dr. Vernon E. Johnson over twenty-five years ago and modified over time, Intervention works through care and concern coupled with specific evidence that moves the person to accept both the reality of his or her condition as well as the help needed to manage it. The chemically dependent person gets the help he or she needs, and the family learns how to manage its recovery and growth through the Intervention process. Most important, Intervention deals with the problem now! And with a problem that's been going on for so long, what better time is there?

The Intervention Process

Intervention Preparation and Intervention*

1. Information: education and exploration (group session or conferencing)

        2. Preparation: treatment planning/statement review/rehearsal (group session)

        3. Intervention: intervention session with patient present (group session)

Follow-up Activities

       1. Post-intervention review and ongoing planning

           2. Thirty days intensive case management

           3. Three months of follow-up and case monitoring

*NOTE: The Preparation and Intervention are usually completed within a seven-day time frame involving approximately nine participatory hours.
